Eid Mubarak 2008

Khutba sa Las Pinas, Philippines

Eid Mubarak ko langon a manga Pilandok sa donya!

I can't remember a big Eid celebration in Ranao when I was a kid. I think, it was only after the return of the "kalo-kalo" Ulama and the arrival of the Tableeghs in the early 1980s that some Pilandok truly understood the meaning of the two Eid festivals... and few of the basic teachings of Islam.

Anyway, I caught an important message in the Eid khutba. Volunteerism. Every one of us has to think of what he can do to help reform our society, and do it. I thought that was very appropriate for the Kini.Kini.Revolution because the success of this social change movement and the future of the Bangsa Muslim depends on our individual participation.

So di sompat o bitiyara, na si man si Amomoai na miyakadi. Miyakadowa pn maka nayk. Si Baooai na damakanayk ka isako mbakonaan (vaccination) sa Abu Dhabi ka pnayk kami na gumiora'goraok na da kainjectioni, da kami makanayk. Gioto i miyasowa iyan.

  2. "Rituals" are ever present in our lives. It is part and parcel of eveyday living or shall i say, existence? It is performed and manifested in each step, in each leg, in every fete and every milestone of our journey through life.

    "Rituals" exist in our SPERM. By that i mean, S-ocial, P-olitical, E-nvironmental, R-eligious, M-ilitary. SPERM is the sum total of our person. It not only speaks of our preferences, but our beliefs and convictions, as well.

    Aratawata promotes social change, and correct me if i am wrong, but my understanding of "change" here, is hollistic. It is not only social change, it is every single aspect of our SPERM.

    Yes, each aspect can stand alone, Yet each one is attached to the other. All aspects are interrelated and intertwined. Suffice it to say, the sum total of these aspects is the "Person".

    You, Me . . . . Us. What you, me or each one of us think is a by-product of what's around us. We are molded by our experiences, by
    the people surrounding us. How we perceive change, be it social or otherwise, is dependent on our present reality.

    Our perception of the future depends primarily on our past and present. Our impression of people, places and things, mushrooms from our everyday experiences, our sites and sounds; our aches and pains; our joys and laughters.

    Now getting back to Aratawata's "Voluntereerism" as one important message in the Eid Khutba, here's my 2 cents worth: Volunteerism is indeed very noble. Not everybody is willing to do things "gratis", but ironically, almost all long for freebies!

    To my mind, TRUE VOLUNTEERISM only happens when it meets the following requisites, i.e.:

    NO VOLUNTEER ACCEPTS A TITLE OR A JOB FOR THE SAKE OF SHOWING OFF OR ELSE IT WILL BECOME HYPOCRISY;

    NO VOLUNTEER ACCEPTS A TITLE OR A JOB WHEN HE KNOWS HE IS NOT QUALIFIED TO DO IT;

    HEY GUYS!, I know there are many more requisites, but these are the only two I can think of right now. It has been a long week but a profound one! Am now going LOW BAT! TGIF!

    WHAT'S YOUR 2 CENT'S WORTH? DO SHARE THEM! YOUR THOUGHTS ARE IMPORTANT! ADD ON!
